Chapter 16
David awoke in the darkness once again, but for the first time he did not actually seem upset about it. In fact, this place, which he had previously thought of as the suffocating darkness, never looked so good to him. If what David believed he had just experienced had actually occurred, then being in a world of sensory deprivation was better by far than the horror he had just left behind. The blackness seemed to have evolved from a place of terror, one he desperately wanted to escape, to a place of some familiarity, where at least for the moment, he actually felt fortunate to have waiting for him.
He wondered if perhaps he was simply becoming accustomed to the dark world. As claustrophobic as it could be, he supposed the idea might actually be true. He was reminded of something his best friend Jim Strauch had once told him. “Davie,” Jim had said, “you can get used to anything if you do it long enough. I suspect you could get used to hanging if you did it long enough.” Although David never quite understood Jim’s folksy analogy, he nonetheless got the meaning of the message he was trying to convey.
Maybe this was what was happening to him right now; maybe the darkness and desolation was the only thing David could rely on for some sense of consistency. God knew everything else he seemed to encounter lately had bordered on madness. He knew he certainly did not want to be in the blackness forever and wanted more than anything else to be awake, alive and healthy with Gina. However, this would only be the case if he could be certain that when he believed he was with Gina, he really was. He had to find some way to be sure it was not actually part of some bizarre illusion or fantasy his mind might have cooked up, especially since those encounters seemed to end very badly.
He did not know how much time had passed since he first recalled awakening in the blackness, but David suspected it might have been a substantial amount of time—perhaps hours or even days. He began to wonder if perhaps his mind might be subconsciously creating a series of dreams and then sabotaging each of them by concocting unbearable scenarios.
The only reason David could imagine why such a thing to occur might be because each time he returned to the darkness, as he consistently seemed to do, he gradually felt more comfortable. If this were true, it would mean his subconscious mind knew the darkness was destined to be the norm for David’s new existence, and it would do all it could to help him adapt to that potentially permanent environment.
David understood the human brain was capable of playing tricks, and he wondered if his mind was doing whatever it deemed necessary for the protection of his psyche. He had to seriously consider the possibility his mind might be creating illusions of places much more horrible than the darkness simply so he could better accept it and perhaps even embrace it.
